What is Stewardship
...by Jeanette Mefford

Stewardship is defined as being in a “right relationship” with God, with others, our possessions, and the earth.

To be in a “right relationship” is to accept responsibility for the gifts we have been given. The concept of the role of stewards as co-creators with God brings stewardship quickly and boldly into focus. We are given generous gifts from God and have the obligation to cherish them and tend them responsibly, share them in justice and love with all and return them with increases to God.

A faithful steward will accept gifts, evaluate opportunities and invest what God has given in such a way that it will produce the best possible results. We can determine much about our spiritual life and how faithfully we fulfill our stewardship responsibilities by what we treasure. Our use of time, talent, money and other resources clearly show our commitment, because we invest in what our hearts value most.

Christian stewardship applies to everything - all personal talents, abilities and wealth; the local, national and worldwide environment; all human and natural resources wherever they are; the economic order, government affairs and even outer space. This stewardship does not tolerate indifference to anything important in God’s world.

Christian stewardship is Christian Living. God has entrusted life and life’s resources to us and given us the privilege of responsibility in managing them for him. Christian stewardship is not a solo performance but is lived out within a community of faith to the benefit of the world.

The Stewardship Committee spent a year in 1999-2000 outlining a strategic plan for the future of St. Joan of Arc. This plan evolved to a strategy of "Collaborative Ministry".
