Lenten Discussion 2000: "Refusing to Forget"

For five Wednesdays in Lent 4 or 5 Sister Parish Committee members and eight other parish members followed this discussion guide on Nunca Mas, a documentation of the civil war in Guatemala. Each week we read personal reflections from Guatemalans on their experiences and prayed through their suffering with reflections on the Economic Way of the Cross. The guide was particularly thorough in describing the brutal methods that were used to dismantle the Mayan villages and culture in the northern provinces. In some cases families were torn apart with brothers killing each other. Trust and everything sacred was pulled away from these peoples. At the same time we made our connections with the US support of these methods.
We talked about the role of the global economic system in keeping the poor in Guatemala poor. Along with our brothers and sisters in Tierra Nueva Dos it is important for us the "announce and denounce" these events so that in our remembering we can avoid repeating these mistakes. However, as a country, the US role in the Colombian "drug war" that is being voted on in Congress was highlighted as a potential repeat of the same events.
