Our Shared Mission
---
The purpose of the Sister Parish relationship is to promote equality and respect and broaden our knowledge of the people and cultures of each church through sharing on a cultural, spiritual, economic, social and political level.
A special focus of our exchange is the human development of women, children and young adults. Participating in the Sister Parish relationship will contribute to the integration and universality of the Church, which will promote communal growth.
We are committed to the growth and improvement of the Sister Parish organization, which we will support through timely, ongoing communication on the national and international level.

The Sister Parish Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month in the Parish Center to plan and coordinate various activities that support our mission. We operate out of a "solidarity" model rather than a "charity" model in our relationship with our sister parish (View a letter on solidarity vs. charity).

Our Sister Parish in Guatemala
Our Sister Parish is San Marcos Evangelista (St. Mark the Evangelist) parish in the community of Tierra Nueva 2 near Guatemala City. Our hermanamiento (sister parish relationship) began in 1995 and has enjoyed a rich and rewarding history.
Emphasizing the Relationship
The most important method we use to maintain the vitality of our hermanamiento is by visiting each other regularly. Each year one or more delegations travels between Tierra Nueva 2 and Minneapolis to keep in touch. When we visit each other we at St. Joan's learn much about the historical, social, political and economic situation in Guatemala and we share insights from our lives with our Guatemalan friends as well.
Maintaining Awareness
Between delegations we keep each other appraised of news that is relevant to our lives. We often find opportunities to act on each other's behalf in response to political or economic issues that impact us.
A Network of Support
A broad network of people and organizations exists that shares the same concerns that challenge us. We are not alone in our work for peace and justice!
