The day started out at that place we SJA'ers
love, Sunday Mass. The delegates were introduced by Fr. George
at both services and participated in the candle sales after
masses. The community of Tierra Nueva Dos began a candle
business on $200 seed money from SJA several years ago. The
money raised by candle sales is used to help fund the
delegate's airfare to Minnesota. Many hellos were exchanged
between Guatemalans and Americans. Then it was a quick lunch
and off to the "Pumpkin Patch".
We had a great time at the pumpkin patch. Some
of us brought picnic lunches. As we sat under the clouds,
amidst the cool breezes, I indicated to the Guatemalan's that
this was not ideal weather for a Minnesota picnic lunch. We
managed to eat even though some had on warm mittens, hats and
jackets.
We enjoyed a hayride around the farm. Farmer Troy talked about some of the animals and about 40 acres of pumpkin farming. The also had lots of scary characters throughout the farm area including the haunted house, graveyard and old hearse. They had animals for the petting and feeding, including turkeys, goats, and lambs. We all bought pumpkins in preparation for the carving party on Tuesday night.
Then off to the apple orchard. I think the most exciting thing seemed to be the mini-donuts and popcorn, but we did manage to buy apples, cider and apple butter. There was even a little wine tasting. That Joel character is a poor influence. No harm done though.
In the evening the youth delegates attended the
Sunday Prayer Service with SJA youth and had a chance to see
old friends and meet new ones. Each host family group was then
on their own for the evening. Stay tuned for tomorrow.
