- Goal Setting
The Council spent considerable time discussion the goals, starting from where we had finished last month. The Council agreed upon the following for the goals for this coming year:
“St. Joan of Arc provides a fertile place for all people to grow in their desire to make a difference in the world by engaging in collaborative ministry." This vision can begin to become a reality by emphasizing the following areas:
- Peace & Justice: What does it mean to become a “Peace Church?”
- Hospitality: What does hospitality mean for us at SJA as we continue to grow?
- Communication: How can our communication tools more effectively help us to carry out our mission?
- Financial responsibility: Raise the remaining money for the Capital Campaign; maintain an adequate operating budget; plan for long-range financial responsibility.
- Archdiocesan Capital Campaign:
Jack Hodnett who works for the fund raising company that is doing the Capital Campaign for the Archdiocese gave a brief presentation about the campaign. He showed a 10-minute video explaining where the money from the campaign will go. The Council had a few questions that Jack answered, emphasizing the fact that we are in the middle of a campaign and that we are short in our own efforts.
After Jack left the Council agreed that it will be difficult to raise much money for this campaign, but George stressed the fact that we need to do something.
George asked the Council for a volunteer to attend the June 18 meeting at St. Thomas - John volunteered - many thanks John! John will go to this meeting along with Ruth Shriver from the Finance Committee. Peter will see to it that Ruth and John get in touch with each other.
- Old Business
- Parish Leadership: Joan handed out a document that she and George Moudry created regarding the change of pastors here at St. Joan of Arc. It outlined a possible process that the council can use when the time comes for George W. to leave. All members felt this will be very helpful and thanked Joan for her work.
- Review of May 10 Discernment process: Council members felt it was a good process. One concern is in that process it is difficult to control a balanced gender proportion on the Council. This was an issue that the Council needs to look into next year.
The question of doing more for those who did get elected was raised. The Council felt that it would be good to call those who participated but did not make it. Peter is to assign the calls; he’ll send you a separate email with the candidates phone number.
- New Business:
- Council Picnic and Council Staff Retreat: Dates were set for these two events:
-
Council Picnic to say farewell to the outgoing members and hello to the new members will be at Joan Riebel’s house - 130 N. Lexington, St. Paul on July 12 - 6:00 - significant others are invited.
- Council/Staff Retreat Aug 16 6:00 - 9:00 in Hospitality Hall. Dinner included. Carol and Claude volunteered to plan that event. We will also have a staff person on the planning committee.
- Election of New Chair: Congratulations to Carol the new Chair!
- Farewell Remarks from Brad: Brad gave a brief farewell address to the Council. Some of his points were: he recommended that we look at 4 year terms; to invite Jim Cassidy to be a regular member of the Council; for the members to be active in their liaison roles. Brad thanked the Council and said he greatly enjoyed his years on the Council and especially this last year as Chair.
- Visibility of Members: Members agreed to continue to have members present in the Sunday Registration Office. They will stop over the summer, but continue in Sept.
- Evaluation: Some of the comments were: good meeting, good year; good participation. It was a good year with many diverse ideas, we all come from different places, yet there was always respect and listening going on. It went fast, and learned a lot. We accomplished much. This has been very interesting, I like the great diversity. We faced some tough issues and did well.
Meeting adjourned at 9:45.
Next meeting is Thur. Sept 6, 2001 at 7:00 PM - In the Upper Room
July 12 - Picnic at Joan’s
Aug. 16 Council/Staff Retreat
Respectfully submitted,
Peter Eichten
