Readers and Musicians
Patriotism vs. Nationalism
Sunday, July 13th 2008

On Sunday, July 13th, SJA readers and musicians, along with guest musicians Paul and Tim Frantzich and Joe Savage, will explore themes of patriotism and nationalism at our liturgies. In this month when we celebrate Independence Day, and in a season when the upcoming elections loom large in our consciousness, this liturgy gives us an opportunity to reflect on our country and its place in the world and to ask ourselves important questions: What are “American values” and do our actions reflect those values? To what ideals can we commit ourselves as citizens of the United States and citizens of the world? As people of faith, and followers of Jesus, do we truly believe in a God that blesses all the world’s nations? And finally, as disciples of Christ, how can we help to co-create a country and a world that reflect God’s justice, peace and compassion? This liturgy is a collaborative effort that includes readings, visual images and music from many different sources and it will be a beautiful celebration.  Please join us!
