Thank you to Fred Vagle and our St. Joan of Arc musicians for providing two special songs at today’s liturgies.

SJA Pastoral Council Discernment: The Pastoral Council is seeking nominations for parishioners interested in joining the Council, a visioning and planning body of parishioners who foster full participation of the parish in the life and mission of the church as lived out at SJA. From now until May 12 nominate individuals that you feel embrace these qualities. Forms are available in the Parish Center. Nominees will be invited to attend an Information Night, Wednesday, May 14, to learn about the role of the Pastoral Council. A formal Night of Discernment will be held Wednesday, May 28.

The Annual Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 8 pm in the gym. Join us for carnival games, face painting, a clown and entertainment. Bring yourself, your family and a salad or dessert to share. Burgers, brats and beverages will be provided. FFI or to volunteer please call Steve Friedrichs at the Parish Center.

The Bottom Line: A recent study of income for Americans indicates that the spread between the rich and the rest continues to grow. 88% of Americans make 40% of total national income, while 12% of Americans make 60% of total national income, with the top 1% making 20% of national income. And over 30% of working American adults make less than $30,000 a year.

- Peter Eichten, Parish Administrator

Pastor's 2 Cents: Fr. Jim DeBruycker:

The comic Emo Philips tells a story about two people meeting on a bridge, one is about to jump. The other tries to talk him out of it. They get to the subject of religion and find they both belong to the same obscure Christian sect. They delineate the permutations the sect has gone through, different doctrinal crises and conventions, until they find they diverge on the smallest of matters. The non-jumper pushes the other off the bridge with, “Die heretic!”

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
-Matthew 28:18-20

Last week at the 5 pm mass I talked about a street preacher who used to set up shop at 11:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays in front of Shinders on 7th and Hennepin (when block E was block E).

“Jesus told me to love you! He didn’t say anything about liking you. You stink of
sin, you are walking with joyful deliberation marching
toward your sin and your damnation. Drinking, and looking for what you call love,
God is crying for you, I am weeping for you.”
God help you if you tried not to be noticed. “I see you trying to be invisible. You can shrink from me but almighty God sees you, and he is calling out don’t, don’t, don’t. Give up your idolatry of the senses, fall on your knees and receive Christ’s forgiveness. Receive Jesus”

Well isn’t that something.

Jesus ascended and gave us the great commission to evangelize. You are Christ now; what would you say at 7th & Hennepin? Most Christians, unlike the Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons, don’t do a lot of cold call preaching. In fact, we’re insulted when we have to defend what we believe to door knocking outsiders.

So, what would you say in 50 words or less to get the crowd’s attention? (you can’t use John 3:16).

I’m going to hate myself for this, but you can e-mail me the results at . I’ll publish the best in the Pastor’s 2Cents.

Dr. Steve Miles’ talks on torture, scheduled at SJA today and Tuesday, May 6, have been canceled by the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese says this is neither a criticism of Dr. Miles’ credentials as a physician nor the commendable work he does combating torture or helping the victims of torture but was necessitated by his strong advocacy of abortion which is untenable with the Church’s teaching. Copies of Dr. Miles’ Sunday talk are available in the gym vestibule. Dr. Miles’ Tuesday night follow-up presentation has moved to the Carondelet Center. FFI pick up a flyer outside the gym entrances.
