INTRODUCTION Timoteo Martinez Good morning brothers and sisters. Receive a greeting of peace and justice on behalf of the Church of Tierra Nueva Dos, of the parish St. Mark the Evangelist. My name is Timoteo Martinez, I have come with the delegation from your sister parish in Tierra Nueva Dos. I’m pleased to share this message of living together in peace and humility as described in today’s gospel. PEACE FRUIT OF HUMILITY Jesus, in this gospel, sees the people of Israel like a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Because the government had little concern for these people, Jesus offered to take care of them, as a shepherd would care for the sheep. Jesus felt compassion for the multitude. Jesus told his disciples to feed the crowd, but they didn't know of a way to feed so many people. A boy appears with five barley loaves and two fish. The youth represents the courage, the spirit, and the strength to stand up and to call for unity and denounce the injustices committed against the people. The barley loaves and the fish represent the good things that have been given to human beings to distribute fairly. If people and governments are able to overcome their selfishness and establish a better balance among what we give and what we receive, there will be enough for all. As Christians and members of society we have the responsibility to elect the most appropriate people to lead for the common good and justice for all. They should seek to provide opportunities for all to access public services that satisfy the needs of the people. When we speak of peace and humility, it is difficult for us because we have to first look inside ourselves for internal peace. Then we can help others around us. Because of a lack of information, organization, or solidarity in our society we have problems like: material war, spiritual war, hunger, poverty, unemployment, crime, discrimination and so many other things. If I am selfish, this will not lead to a good future. I have to keep others in mind. Jesus, with the immense love that has for us, shares the poverty, injustice, unemployment, and inequality of his people. Jesus is not in agreement with what the government does, when they want to humiliate the people of God with their wars, drugs, or weapons trade. This indicates to us that there is not true support or solidarity, to help in the positive development of countries. Jesus invites us to have a firm faith, based on constant prayer, to enable us to grow spiritually and materially. This will give us the opportunity to serve and to help others. Saint Paul, in the second reading, invites us to be humble and live simply. We should accept each other with love, united in the Spirit, joined with peace, because there is only one body and one spirit. With this one body and one spirit we can work together as sister parishes to build the Kingdom of God today. IN SPANISH INTRODUCCION Hermanos y hermanas muy buen día. Reciban un saludo de paz y bien de parte de la Iglesia de Tierra Nueva dos, de la parroquia San Marcos Evangelista. Mi nombre es Timoteo Martinez, vengo con la delegación de hermanamiento de su comunidad hermana de Tierra Nueva dos y me da gusto compartir este mensaje de convivencia paz y humildad del evangelio de este día. LA PAZ FRUTO DE LA HUMILDAD. Jesús en este evangelio ve al pueblo de Israel como un rebano de ovejas sin pastor, por la poca preocupación de los gobernantes Jesús se preocupa y se presenta como pastor en medio de sus ovejas. Jesús sintió compasión de aquella multitud. Jesús pide a sus discípulos que le den comida a esta multitud pero no encontraron manera de dar comida a tanta gente. Aparece un joven con cinco panes y dos pescados, el joven representa la valentía, la animación, la fuerza para caminar y anunciar la unidad y denunciar las injusticias cometidas en contra de nuestro pueblo. Los panes y los pescados representan los bienes que le han sido dados al ser humano para su justa administración, si las personas y los gobiernos somos capaces de superar nuestro egoísmo y se establece un mejor equilibrio entre lo que damos y lo que recibimos Habrá suficiente para todos. Como cristianos y miembros de la sociedad tenemos la responsabilidad de elegir a las personas mas adecuadas para dirigir a la sociedad en la administración del bien publico y la justicia, buscando que cada vez hayan oportunidades para todos de acceso al bien común y satisfacción de sus necesidades. Cuando hablamos de paz y humildad es difícil para nosotros porque tenemos que buscar la paz interior para apoyar a los demás, a quienes nos rodean, por falta de información, organización, solidaridad en la sociedad nos oprimen estos problemas como: Guerra material, Guerra espiritual, hambre, pobreza desempleo, violación de las leyes, discriminación y un sin fin de cosas más. El pensar en mi bien personal nunca me traerá nada futurista, tengo que tener en cuenta a los demás, Jesús con el inmenso amor que nos tiene comparte la pobreza, injusticia, desempleo, desigualdad de su pueblo, Jesús no esta de acuerdo con lo que nuestros gobernantes hacen, queriendo humillar al pueblo de Dios con sus guerras, drogas, intercambiando armas, eso nos indica que no hay un apoyo real, solidario, de ayuda para el buen desarrollo de los países. Jesús nos invita a tener una fe firme, basada en una oración constante, para lograr crecer espiritual y materialmente y tendremos la oportunidad de servir y ayudar a los demás. San Pablo, en la segunda lectura, nos invita a ser humildes, sencillos y que debemos soportarnos con amor, unidos en el espíritu, con él vinculo de la paz, porque no hay mas que un solo cuerpo y un solo Espíritu.

PEACE, FRUIT OF JUSTICE Bernardo talking with parishioner John Reinhardt Peace and justice to you my brother and sisters. Wishing that God our father and mother bless you. I am Bernardo de Jesus, member of the sister parish committee in Tierra Nueva Dos since the beginning of our relationship in 1994. I feel honored to present to you some ideas of the delegates and members of both sister parish committees as we look at today’s Gospel. To the Guatemalans that have had the pleasure of getting to know St. Joan’s it is very clear that something very special is happening here. Many people are moved by the Spirit of God to act. What I am about to say is not something to be taken lightly. I have thought about this a great deal. I feel it is the truth and needs to be said. And Jesus will say to you: because when I was hungry you gave me something to eat; when I was naked, you clothed me; when I was sick, you visited me; I was a stranger and you welcomed me. We should continue together on this journey, in this wonderful adventure that we have undertaken when we got involved in this sister parish relationship. The barley loaves and the fish in today’s gospel, represent the good things that have been given to human beings to distribute fairly. If people and governments are able to overcome their selfishness and establish a better balance among what we give and what we receive, there will be enough for all. As Christians and members of society, we have the responsibility to elect the most appropriate people to lead for the common good and justice for all. They should seek to provide opportunities for all to access public services that satisfy the needs of the people. What stands out in the gospel is that the person that presented the solution to the problem of feeding the crowd was one who didn’t count. He was a child and the gospel states five thousand men – this does not include the women and children. This message is very hopeful. It really doesn’t take a whole lot to solve a big problem. God takes the little that each one of us is able to give and multiplies it so that there is enough for all. But if we don’t have the capacity or the will to share, it is not possible to achieve peace, because if I have too much of something, it really belongs to somebody else. The main problems that confront our societies are structural. If we don’t change the unjust structures, which give origin to social conflicts, we won’t be able to achieve a true peace. We have to make an objective analysis of our reality and be conscious of the problems that we live with, their causes and their consequences. We need to ask God the father and mother to allow us to be instruments of peace. In my country it is believed that if we have more police, and invest more money in security forces and more weapons, it will solve the problem of the violence. Perhaps a change of attitude would be more effective. To believe that our security depends on being able to carry a concealed weapon is going backwards two hundred years in history. We as Christians should be the ones to demand of our governments create fair political and economic relationships between the north and the south. Free trade agreements could further damage the already battered economies of the less powerful countries and make even worse the social crises [crisees], the destruction of the environment and give more power to big businesses and land owners to harm the small producers and companies, if there are no rules to prevent this and ways to enforce those rules. We cannot remain indifferent towards the attitude of our governments. They are protecting economic and political interests and going to the extremes of the attempted murder of innocent human beings. Because of their own self-interest, they are violating the sovereign rights of other nations and their freedom to rule themselves; on the pretext of protecting the world from horrendous things and diabolical enemies, which they have not always been able to prove exist, such as the nuclear arsenal of Iraq. Can we imagine, for example, a democratic system where a military man that doesn't even show minimal respect for the constitution, who is being accused in international courts of genocide, and whose regime made the worst violations in human rights, can then easily run as a presidential candidate while friendly neighboring democracies keep silent? It is very important to change the thinking and attitude of those who call ourselves Christians when we face these difficult social, political, economic and spiritual crises that burden our societies. To do this we need a renewal of our efforts to support and promote organization, unity, the sharing of information, and solidarity. With this effort, and our shared spirit we can work together as sister parishes to build the Kingdom of God today. IN SPANISH LA PAZ FRUTO DE LA JUSTICIA Justicia y Paz para ustedes hermanas y hermanos que nuestro Dios Padre y madre los bendiga. Soy Bernardo de Jesús, miembro del comité de hermanamiento desde el inicio de nuestra relación en 1994. Me siento honrado de presentar ante ustedes un resumen general de las ideas de hermanos de la delegación y miembros de los comités de ambas Iglesias que reflexionamos sobre el mensaje de hoy. Para los guatemaltecos que hemos tenido el agrado de conocer a la comunidad de Santa Juana y a las personas que participan en ella es claro que aquí esta sucediendo algo muy especial, muchas personas están actuando movidas por el Espíritu de Dios, esto es algo que no se puede decir a la ligera, tuve que meditarlo mucho, pero así es y es justo que se diga. …Y Jesús les dirá…porque tuve hambre y me dieron de comer, estuve desnudo me vestisteron, estuve enfermo me visitastaron, fui forastero y me recibieron en su casa. Debemos continuar juntos en este camino, en la aventura maravillosa que hemos emprendido al involucrarnos en el proyecto que estamos realizando en esta iglesia. Los panes y los pescados podrían representar los bienes que le han sido dados al ser humano para su justa administración. Si las personas y los gobiernos somos capaces de superar nuestro egoísmo y de establece un mejor equilibrio entre lo que damos y lo que recibimos, Habrá suficiente para todos. Como cristianos y miembros de la sociedad tenemos la responsabilidad de elegir a las personas mas adecuadas para dirigir a la sociedad en la administración del bien publico y la justicia, buscando que cada vez haya oportunidades para todos de acceso al bien común y satisfacción de sus necesidades. Debe destacarse que el evangelio habla de que la persona que hizo posible la solución del problema del hambre fue un muchacho, un niño, porque dentro de los cinco mil dice, no se contaba ni a las mujeres ni a los niños. Este mensaje es muy esperanzador, en realidad no hace falta tanto para afrontar problemas que consideramos demasiado grandes. Dios toma lo poco que cada uno de nosotros es capaz de dar y lo multiplica para que haya suficiente para todos. Pero si no existe la capacidad y voluntad de compartir no es posible alcanzar la paz, porque lo que a mi me sobra le pertenece a alguien mas. Los principales problemas que afrontan nuestras sociedades son estructurales y mientras no se cambien las estructuras injustas que dan origen a los conflictos sociales, no se podrá alcanzar una verdadera paz. Tenemos que hacer un análisis objetivo de nuestra realidad y tomar conciencia de la problemática que vivimos, sus causas y consecuencias, y pedir Dios padre y madre que nos permita ser instrumentos de su paz. En mi país se cree que con mas policías, e invirtiendo mas dinero en fuerzas de seguridad y más armas se resolverá el problema de la violencia, no seria talvez mas efectivo un cambio de actitud. Creer que nuestra seguridad depende de poder llevar un arma en la cintura es como retroceder doscientos anos en la historia. Nos compete a los cristianos de hoy exigir a nuestros gobiernos relaciones políticas y económicas Justas entre el norte y el sur. Los Tratados de libre comercio podrían dañar aun mas las ya maltrechas economías de los países menos poderosos y agudizar aun mas las crisis sociales, la destrucción del medio ambiente y el privilegio para los grandes empresarios o dueños de la tierra en perjuicio de los pequeños productores y la pequeña y mediana empresa, sobre todo si no existen nomás claras ni afán de respetarlas. No podemos permanecer indiferentes ante la actitud de nuestros gobiernos que con tal de proteger intereses económicos y políticos llegan al extremo de atentar contra la vida de seres humanos inocentes, violando de forma prepotente el derecho a la soberanía de otras naciones, su libertad de auto gestión, so pretexto de proteger al mundo de males horrendos y enemigos diabólicos, que no siempre se ha podido demostrar que existan, como el peligroso arsenal nuclear de Irak. Podemos imaginar por ejemplo un sistema democrático donde un militar que no muestra el mas mínimo respeto por la constitución, que es acusado en cortes internacionales por genocidio, en cuyo régimen son cometidas las peores violaciones de los derechos humanos que luego puede tranquilamente proponerse como candidato presidencial ante el silencio cómplice de sus democracias vecinas amigas. Es muy importante un cambio de pensamiento y de actitud en quienes nos llamamos cristianos ante las agudas crisis sociales políticas y económicas y espirituales que agobian a nuestras sociedades. Una renovación de nuestros esfuerzos por apoyar y promover la organización, unión, información, solidaridad. Un esfuerzo decidido por fomentar hacia el interior de nuestras organizaciones el sentido de ser misioneros en medio de una sociedad en caos, fomentando los valores fundamentales morales, espirituales y éticos que propicien la realización plena, en nuestro mundo, del Reino de Dios.
