 Retirement Ministry Proposed

One need only consult the demographic statistics of the United States to realize that in the next ten years, millions of baby boomers will be joining the ranks of the retired in the United States. But the term retirement is being redefined; few see it as the closing stage of their lives. Today, most new retirees see it as a new chapter, one with endless potential.

Today, most new retirees see it as a new chapter, one with endless potential.

SJA parishioners Mark Scannell and Steve Linney are both newly retired and contemplating all the possibilities now open to them. After much deliberation and discussion, they are proposing a new ministry for SJA, a Retirement Ministry. Mark envisions it modeled after the Mental Illness Ministry which has been a wonderful instrument, providing resources, education and support. Steve sees it as being a new source of spiritual energy in the parish. Both men talked about educational possibilities, social gatherings, perhaps even service projects. But they made it clear that, for them, retirement is first and foremost about freedom and choice. They are not trying to create a need if others don’t share their vision.

Sue O'Brien is the wife of Tom, mother of four children, and grandmother of eight. She is dental hygienist and manages a dental practice in Spring Lake Park. A parishioner for many years, Sue worked as a caregiver at Grace House for seven years, beginning the week it opened. Now she is looking forward to meeting new people at St. Joan of Arc as she helps out as a web reporter and photographer. Sue can be reached at sueo-b@comcast.net.
On Monday, April 7 there will be a free lunch at St. Joan of Arc to discuss the possibility of a Retirement Ministry. Anyone who may be contemplating retirement or is already retired is welcome and encouraged to attend. Mark and Steve see it as a time to determine the amount of interest, to gather ideas about the mission and format, and to assemble a task force to present a proposal. They believe it’s possible to actually launch the ministry in the fall.

Bring your ideas, your questions, your spouses and your friends. Your input is requested and valuable as the group strives to assemble a model for the innovative idea. We look forward to seeing you there.
