Angel at San Miguel
Parishioner Poem

“St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. Do thou rebuke him, you heavenly hosts, and, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the other evil powers, who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen”
(prayer formerly recited after mass)

ANGEL AT SAN MIGUEL

At Cozumel, island of swallows,
On Epifania, the feast of three kings,
I personally met Baltasar,
The bearer of myrrh,
And beheld the Archangel Michael,
Like a swallow from heaven,
Returned in due season,
Dancing in the plaza.

He would come and go,
Do a salsa number or
A spiritual mariachi,
Dancing before the Lord,
Making eye contact
With nobody.

Dancing in rhythm
With unseen host
His elegant movements
Filled the dark zocalo
With angel light,
Only seen when the heart is ready.

He cavorted in white hat,
White shoes, white suit,
A Mayan glyph,
Angular, agile, yet senile,
In perfect tempo
With an unseen partner.

In and out among the couples
He swerved and strutted,
Blessing them as he went.

They, absorbed in their dance,
Did not see him.

Middle-aged stubby
Staccato dancing Mayan woman
In step with her husband
Described controlled frenzy
As if before the great Pyramid
At Chichen Itza,
Without a glance aside,
Fully aware of the Archangel’s
Hovering brightness,
Themselves ethereal
In the heavenly court,
Moving to a music unheard.

We watched him dance
With movements from a foreign place.
He vanished between numbers,
And we could not leave our seats.

Defend us in battle,
Dance about us always,
Hover with bright wings
Over this island of swallows.

ANGEL A COZUMEL

A Cozumel, isla de golondrinas,
En Epifanía, fiesta de los tres reyes,
Conocí a Baltasar en persona,
Al portador de mirra,
Y contemplé el Arcangel Miguel,
Así como golondrina de cielo,
Regresando en estación debida,
Bailando en la plaza.

Vendría y saldría,
Bailaría una danza de salsa
O quizás de mariachi espirituel,
Saltando antes del Señor
Lanzando miradas a nadie.

Saltaría en ritmo
Con armadas invisibles,
Sus pasos de gracia
Illuminando el zócalo oscuro
Con luz angelica,
Visible no más a corazones listos.

Brincaría en sombrero blanco,
Zapatos blancos, vestido blanco,
Un glifo de Maya,
Angular, agil, senil,
A tiempo con bailarina de más allá.

Adentro y fuera entre las parejas
Viraba, marchaba, pavoneaba,
Benediciéndolas en carrera.
Ellas, en baile extasiadas,
No lo notaron.

Una mujer Maya,
Cortita, robusta, de mediana edad
En par con su hombre,
Dibujó frenesí controlado.
Como si antes del Gran Piramide
A Chichen Itza,
Sin miradas soslayas,
Sabedores de claridad
Aleteando de Miguel,
Pasearon con musica de los altos,

Ellos mismos etereales
En corte celestial.

Y al lado de ellos Miguel.
Lo espiamos moverse

Con danza de tierra mística,
Evanesciendo entre las canciones,
Nosotros fijados por asombro.

Defiéndanos en batalla,
Baile siempre alrededor de nosotros,
Flote con alas incandescentes
Sobre esta isla de golondrinas.
