| The SJA Library and Bookstore |
The idea of a library and resource center for the parish is a relatively new one. In a member-centered community such as St. Joan of Arc, parishioners actively participate in all aspects of worship and fellowship/community/outreach. The library was conceived to be a source of tools for parishioners to design worship, to contemplate personal growth, and to discern and pursue ethical action. When the Parish Center was remodeled in 2001, the parish book collection was reduced to a small selection of books thought to be of current interest. The Spirit At Work committee donated its extensive collection of books. Contributions from staff were solicited and parishioners came forward with used books from their personal libraries. A small room to house these gifts was found in the renovated Parish Center.
The Lily Room, centrally located on the first floor of the Parish Center, houses our library. One wall of shelves contains the lending library, and another is devoted to periodicals. Low shelves along the remaining two walls contain secular and religious reference materials (non-circulating), audio and videotapes, and materials of special interest to specific parish groups.
Right now the lending shelves are in the process of being repaired and are in some disarray. By Christmas the repairs will be complete and visitors will be able to find selections in their proper locations.
How To Find Books
The lending library is organized into the following categories:![]()
Many of the books could have been classified into two or more categories. On the shelves, categories are arranged alphabetically. Books are shelved alphabetically by author within each category. Author and title listings of books and tapes are contained in a three-ring binder which serves as a catalog. Borrowers sign books out by hand using a form attached to a clipboard. Materials are loaned for three weeks at a time. A basket for returns, the catalog, and the sign-out sheets are located atop a low shelf on the south wall of the library. |
Future plans for the library include acquisition of a computer (a previously-owned laptop would be welcome) for internet access, and conversion of the catalog to a searchable database. Staff recommendations will be highlighted on a monthly basis. A youth library is coming into being in an adjacent meeting room, the Daisy Room. Plans are also underway to establish a Children’s Corner, a space especially for young parishioners who visit the library with their parents.
The library is open whenever the Parish Center is open, that is, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, Fridays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Sundays between 8 am and 1 pm. Parishioners are welcome to volunteer to help maintain the library. Donations are accepted when staff considers the books to be of significant interest to the parish as a faith community. Any suggestions or donations may be given to Anne Garvey, the evening receptionist at the Parish Center (agarvey@stjoan.com).
The Bookstore
A list of books in stock is being developed and will be available at the website in the near future. The table below shows an example of what was available earlier this fall. Any requests for books can be left with bookstore volunteers on Sunday mornings. At other times a phone message or note may be left for them at the front desk of the Parish Center. The bookstore volunteer and cart can be found in the reception area of the Parish Center on Sundays after mass in cold weather. In fair weather they move to the courtyard outside the Gym.
