Website Update
... what's new as of July 2001

The St. Joan of Arc website, in its current incarnation, is now a year and a half old. Some Asian cultures believe a baby does not become fully human until 1 year of age. It was around stjoan.com's first birthday that we appeared to fully achieve website status. The website has become a depended upon part of the SJA community by a significant number of parishioners and former parishioners around the world.

Statistically, we appear to have leveled off in visitor usage, another indication of maturity. Use of our website is currently averaging from 250-300 users a day viewing 1200-1500 pages of material. Although these numbers may gradually rise over the next few years as more parishioners come online, our growth spurt from the early months appears to be over. Another sign of maturity is that visitors are visiting a wide range of sections of the website. As the amount of content has increased, viewers are clicking to the new regions of the website. Here are some of the features of the website that are popular:

These popular sections plus many more have made the SJA website a success in its first 2 years. The website was named “Best of the Net” for Catholic Churches in America by the webportal, About.com. Several individual awards have also come to our community website that involves over 70 parishioners working collaboratively. There are still weaknesses in the website and need for more involvement. Please offer your suggestion on our comment page.

We also recently switched webhosting companies in an effort to improve service and save money. Our current contract hosts all of our pages, including the audio/video and provides unlimited email boxes for staff for about $35 a month. All of the labor by the webmaster, reporters, photographers, and web designers is volunteered. In the last year, we have added an online contribution link that has raised some money for the church. We hope to make this website a no-cost effort by opening a small Stjoan Store online to sell archived music and homilies.

Starting in May, we began offering online registration for many programs and services. You can fill out the Shared Ministry form, sign up for the nursery or religious ed programs and register for SJA events requiring registration. You can even contribute online via a secure transaction webserver here.

Currently our webteam numbers over 70 parishioners with a need for more especially in the area of webreporting. Fifty seven members of our team have signed up for reporting on events and feature stories. They have not been able to keep up with the pace of events at SJA. Because the webreporting job is a no obligation, do-it-when-you-can opportunity we probably need close to 200 parishioners signed up to cover every SJA event. Please consider adding your name to our list. About 20 parishioners have a digital camera and are on our webphotographer list. We could use more people here also. We have 6 parishioners on our team who have adopted a section of stjoan.com and are maintaining/updating it. You can see who is on the webteam at this page.
