Koko Dehn Service and Benefit
Wednesday, June 21st and Saturday, June 24th

A group of friends and neighbors knew they had to do something. And what better way of showing support for a family struggling with many unknowns than to organize a night celebrating family and community.

The fiesta for Koko Dehn and his family on Saturday, June 24 was that and more. There was plenty of delicious food (some donated by St. Joan of Arc), a variety of musical entertainment, dancing, and even a ventriloquist. Face painting and the hill in front of Ann and Dennis Tank's house were especially magnetic attractions for the younger set.

"It's just so unbelievable to have this many friends show their support for Koko," said Michelle Dehn, holding back her tears. "You just can't imagine what this means to us. You are all so special."

Koko, his parents Michelle and Don, and his brother Willy are very active in the kids and family ministry at St. Joan's and have put on several enjoyable programs during children's masses.

As many SJA members have noticed, Koko's name has appeared regularly in the mass prayers. He was recently diagnosed with a very rare progressive neurological disease as a result of his having had measles as an infant. The measles virus remained in his body and is attacking his brain, similar to bacterial or viral encephalitis. Symptoms of the disease include seizures, difficulty walking independently and concentrating on tasks and using words to communicate.

The process of diagnosing the disease- Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis, finding the right combination of meds, and caring for Koko and Willy has been challenging and stressful for the family.

On Wednesday, June 21, a healing service was held in the church for Koko and his family. The moving service, led by Father George Wertin, was spiritually uplifting for the family and was another way friends and parishioners showed their support.

The Fiesta was a benefit to ease the financial stress caused by Koko's illness. Contributions to the Koko Dehn Benefit Fund can be sent directly to L.B. Community Bank & Trust, 5349 Lyndale Av. S. Mpls., MN 55419. Questions/inquiries should be directed to 612-825-1860.

We can continue to show our support by keeping Koko and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Randy Miranda (is that really Randy??) is originally from Florida, so he is more comfortable in the summer, the more humid the better. He loves gardening (he has helped on occasion with projects around the SJA grounds) and music (virtually every genre but opera). He sits on the north side of the gym with his wife, Cacy, and two kids, Matthew and Mallory on most Sundays.
