"AIDS Ride 2000"
...The Trials and Tribulation(but mostly Joys!)
of Team Oz

Kickoff Weekend...final training, party, Day 0

Saturday Morning: As we are tapering down our training regime in anticipation of the ride coming Monday, we only rode 17 miles today. In a sense it gave closure to the many longer riding experiences we shared together. It was hot and humid today, preparing us both mentally and emotionally for what we might be in store for us on the actual ride. We are as ready as we will be for the AIDS ride. To some of us that was less of a comfort than to others! That being said though, our overall mood was one of anticipation! Father Cassidy later drew a comparison to the anticipation of childbirth! We're committed, no turning back, the best is yet to come!

Saturday Evening: A Team Oz send off party was held at the home of Charlene "Charlie" Kapp and Paul Lipetzky on Saturday afternoon. A wonderful assortment of dishes and desserts to share provided the riders, crew, and their loved ones with many culinary pleasures. Children played in the family room, while adults socialized in the kitchen, living room, and on the deck and porch. Stories were shared of past rides, encouragement was given from folks not riding this year, advice was exchanged concerning everything from attire to skin lotions! Beautiful centerpieces reflecting the theme of Team Oz adorned the serving tables. Each participant on the ride was given a ruby slipper, compliments of our gracious hosts, Charlie and Paul.

9 o'clock Mass blessing by Father Jim

On Sunday, July 9th in what is traditionally called Day 0 of the AIDS Ride, riders and crew started the day at the 9 o'clock mass receiving the blessing(above) of the congregation for their journey. They later met at Concordia College in St. Paul, the site of the rides departure the next morning. Final instructions and details are provided. In the pictures below you can see some members of Team Oz wearing their team t-shirts.

Edie Kalweit has been a St. Joan of Arcer for 23 years now. Now that her children are grown, there is time to participate more fully in activities taking place at St. Joan's. She very much looks forward to the AIDS ride next week! Team "OZ" will make every attempt to keep St. Joan's informed as they approach Chicago!
