...The Trials and Tribulations(but mostly Joys!)
of Team Oz

Day 3, Wednesday
From Sparta to Reedsburg(59.1 miles)

Three days under our belt now! We had some downpours toward the end of the ride today, and since we were on crushed sandstone and clay, it got quite messy. I'm including photos of us at a "pit stop" with standing water, waiting in line at the carwash to rinse off our bikes and some wet and dirty riders.
There also is a picture of "Trip" one of our crew on medical duty. Trip is on motorcycle covering the roads for "casualities", medically speaking that is!
There are also photos of us eating lunch, the St. Joan crew and riders. The crew have different color shirts, depending on what their function is on the ride. The photos of crew with purple shirts on are "Sweeps", they stop along the route and either provide water, gatorade or treats between pit stops, ( they have also been seen dancing with bike riders to music they provide for us from their sweep vehicles). They will also transport back riders who just can't continue biking. The crew with red shirts work on the medical team. Then there are crew assigned to each pit stop. On a typical day we have five pit stops. A crew will be assigned to only one pit stop. To make it fun for us, there are themes at the stops that change each day. There is also an ice crew to keep the pit stops supplied with ice. There is a crew of bike mechanics, chiropractors, massage and aqupuncture. Anyone can donate their talents and be put to good use!
Many photos speak for themselves. I'd be glad to elaborate more upon returning. Time is just so short here. This update was sent back to our webmaster at 10:30 pm and we are up tomorrow morning bright and early for another 90 miles and new adventures.
Other photos from today and yesterday are of people along the way who are gracious, generous and very loving. In Elroy a group of retired gentlemen handed us apples as we rode by, shortly thereafter in Union Center folks were cutting us pieces of watermellon and giving us lemonade. There is also a photo of young children and a rider in butterfly wings visiting and exchanging wings. The blonde girl with the Koolaid stand is named "Dorothy" we thought that was great as Team Oz visited! Today was our shortest day, but a day of riding on trails, through a beautiful section of Wisconsin, both geologically and sociologically! We are camping tonight in Reedsburg. Hope to be able to write again soon. -edie

Edie Kalweit has been a St. Joan of Arcer for 23 years now. Now that her children are grown, there is time to participate more fully in activities taking place at St. Joan's. She very much looks forward to the AIDS ride next week! Team "OZ" will make every attempt to keep St. Joan's informed as they approach Chicago!
