Into Temptation: A Screenplay Reading

Have you ever wondered what goes into the making of an independent feature film? Well, it might start with actors seated in a row on a stage reading the manuscript. That’s what happened on Monday night (10/01/07) in St. Joan’s Hospitality Hall as ten local actors gathered to unveil to the public SJA parishioner Patrick Coyle’s screenplay, Into Temptation. This was just a first step in a film project that hopes to begin shooting in the Twin Cities by spring of 2008.

Actors Julie Madden, Marvette Knight, Wendy Henry

The play is about a priest, Father John Buerlein, who, is shaken from his sleepy sanctuary after hearing the confession of a woman about to commit suicide (Linda played by Emily Fradenburgh). He is compelled to go out “into the streets” to find her. This wakes John up not only to the conflicts of the street but also to the conflicts within himself. While this could be a heavy subject, Coyle wraps it in a light touch of humor.

All of the actors did an amazing job of bringing the script and characters alive. As the reading began, the room became so quiet you could hear a pin drop and one could easily visualize the scenes as the actors read. Ron Menzel, actor at the Guthrie and other local theatres, read the part of the protagonist, John. Tim Russell, well known voice actor on A Prairie Home Companion Show, read the parts of Father Ralph, Gus, George, Radio Ad, Donald Dupree and Caretaker. And, our own Julie Madden was the narrator and read the parts of Corrine and Little Red Riding Hood. (See a list of all cast members below.)

Actors Emily Fradenburgh, Tim Russell, Ron Menzel

The purpose of the reading was to generate interest in the film, particularly by investors. Most of Coyle’s production staff was on hand to lend support. It is essentially the same team that was involved in Coyle’s 2003 film, Detective Fiction that went to the Sundance Film Festival and won awards at the Newport International Film Festival and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Film Festival. This time, says Coyle, we’re going a step further in the whole production -- our budget, our casting and, hopefully, our recognition.

The strategy is to start with this script and it’s award-winning director, assemble a professional cast and crew that will include a recognizable “name” actor in one of the leading roles, and utilize the talent and unique locations of the Twin Cities to create an intelligent, commercial film that will get noticed. (John Beasley, best known for his role on Everwood, has already attached as Lloyd).

Patrick(right) and his wife, Lily, not only attend but are actively involved at St. Joan of Arc. Their daughter, Clara, is in second grade and about to make her first communion. Their younger daughter, Ruby, attends Sunday school and mom and dad are the host family once a year at the family Mass. Lily volunteers in the kitchen at funerals and other social events. Patrick says he is a big advocate of St. Joan’s progressive agenda and supports its mission of peace and justice 110%.
