The Last Week
Summer 2007 Bible Study

Chapter 5
| "St. Joan of Arc Bible Study is an open and growing group that meets for
fellowship and to discuss the Bible and other faith-centered literature.
Our informal study group draws from biblical scholarship, historical
perspectives, current events and personal reflections. We welcome honor and
respect the personal ideas and spiritual journeys of all who join us." |
Greetings
It was, as usual, a lively discussion. The group pondered why John's
gospel is so different from the others and wondered about metaphors (if the
vine is a metaphor, and the Shepherd is a metaphor is the Son of God also a
metaphor? oh yes it got lively) We talked about the Eucharist table and who
is and who is not invited to our table. We wondered what Jesus, who sat
with the undesirables of his time, would think of those not invited to the
table now. We wondered if we could ever really know what Jesus said.
Mel Gibson's Passion of Christ, Jesus Christ Superstar and even the Life of
Brian were added into the mix. Luckily we had chewy, chocolatety brownies
from Rita and another round of last week's ice cream to generate enough
energy to get through the night..
Here follows the overview. Thank you Maura for your recap and the notes!

Passover, the meaning of the lamb, Read 2nd paragraph pg 117. )
- What is the meaning of equating bread and wine with body and blood?
then and now . Are Mark, Mathew and Luke saying the same thing?
Mark Mathew Luke -
When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the
apostles with him. "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in
the kingdom of God" Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said,
"Take this and divide it among ourselves; for I tell you that from now on I
will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he
broke it, gave it to them and said this is my body. While they were
eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and after blessing it he broke it, gave
it to the disciples and said "Take, eat: this is my body." Then he took
a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to
them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in
remembrance of me.
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of
them drank from it. Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave
it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; And he did the same
with the cup after supper, saying,
He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for
many. for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many
for the forgiveness of sins. "This cup that is poured out for you is the
new covenant in my blood.
Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until
that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God I tell you, I will
never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it
new with you in my Father's kingdom

but Jesus, while accepting those titles, affirmed himself, rather, as the
