GLBT Family Fun Night

There’s a new social group forming at St. Joan’s, and their first event was a great success. Designed to bring GLBT families with children together, Family Fun Night lived up to its name. On Saturday, Oct. 7th, about 40 people attended the potluck gathering, with children ranging in age from babies to teens.

Committee member Will started the fun with the icebreaker game “Who Am I?”, labeling our backs with a famous person or a Disney character for the kids. People began chatting right away as they attempted to identify their character’s name. Kids and adults alike dove into the abundance of Legos, creating interesting objects, and even a pair of eyeglasses!

Kathy welcomed everyone, shared an opening prayer, introduced the planning committee, and invited us to share in the generous buffet. We dined on potluck favorites, and the kids were pleased to see large pans of lasagna, and macaroni and cheese. The only thing better was the wide variety of yummy deserts which followed our meal.

Norm the Magician warned us to loosen our shoelaces, and his magic knocked our socks off! He entertained us with several magic tricks. Norm’s the kind of magician who likes to share his talent, inviting both kids and parents to the stage. He taught several tricks to the kids, who were surprised at what they could do with only a moment’s lesson. We laughed at the endless colorful handkerchief (that never gets old), magic rings, card tricks, and were truly amazed when Norm pulled a live white dove out of his hat!

Two families helped us close our event. Anne and her daughter shared a prayer, and James, with guitar in hand, and his son had whole room singing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” We have a mailing list for future events. If you’d like to be included, send your email address to Kathy at kitzin@stjoan.com. Our next event is a Hayride on Saturday November 4th at Bunker Hills Park in Coon Rapids.  We’ll arrive by 3:00, and have a hayride from 3:30 – 4:30, followed by a bonfire with s’mores provided by St. Joan’s.  Cost is $7.00 per person. Please join us. RSVP to Kathy Itzin or to the parish center at (612) 823-8205.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event; to Norm the Magician who kept us smiling; and especially to St Joan’s and the planning committee who pulled this together for us!
