The Big Dig - May 26th

A devoted group of garden enthusiasts broke ground last Wednesday to create the 4th annual St. Joan’s garden, affectionately know as “The Left Field”. The flower and vegetable garden already was blooming with tulips that were planted last fall and a border of pink dianthus which just needed to be uncovered from the tall grasses.

With a whirlwind of digging, hoeing and planting, the garden was nearly entirely tilled and planted in about an hour. People brought an assortment of flower and vegetable seeds, however zinnias and beans seemed to be the theme of the evening. The first night of planning included:

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm).
If anyone has carrots, beets and herb seeds or plants that they can contribute, we will try to plant those next week. We are hoping that Farmer Rick will be able to bring some tomato plants too.

The motto of the St. Joan’s Garden is "to teach and inspire". We use the garden to create a green space for the parishioners and the neighborhood to enjoy. It’s also a place to socialize, with or without a green thumb. The gardeners typically plan several social events during the summer such as trips to the MN Arboretum, The Minneapolis Rose Garden, and refreshments after Mass. The first event is a picnic at the garden itself. Just bring some picnic food to share.

Date: Wednesday, June 9
Time: 6 p.m. -
Anyone who is interested in being on the gardening email list can send an email to Dan Chouinard (Farmer Dan) at danchoui@earthlink.net. We plan to meet each Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

We welcome you wherever you are on your green journey!
