“What a beautiful moment” and “what a beautiful family” were phrases I heard repeatedly Sunday morning as people were talking and waiting to congratulate Kathy Itzin and her family on receiving her award.

The entire hall was on their feet clapping, cheering, whistling when Father George asked Kathy and her family to come up. Susan Sell, our pastoral council chair presented an “Award of Excellence in Catechetical Leadership from the community of SJA, to our beloved Kathy Itzin whose “teaching and example have shaped and inspired the faith formation of our children and families”. Susan gave this award with gratitude on this June 8, 2003.

It was a highly emotional moment for all. As Kathy was receiving her award, again blessed, she received a surprise visit from our former pastor, Father Harvey Egan. The elderly, frail Harvey slowly walked forward using a cane, and helped by an attendant. Speaking slowly in a loud, deep, clear voice, he stated that he had two hopes. One hope was that this community will never, never, never, penalized a person for making a mature decision even though it is unpopular. Secondly, he hoped Kathy would accept his expression of respect, admiration, gratitude, and love for her. Another hope was that he might get a hug. He did!

Kathy thanked everyone on this Pentecostal Sunday by saying, “You want to see the Spirit, look around you”.
