Adoptive Family Fun Night

November 7th, 2003

Remember the phrase “‘children are meant to be seen and not heard”? If you ascribe to that theory Hospitality hall was NOT the place to be on Friday evening, November 7, 2003. Around fifty women, men, and children were present for the second Adoption Fun Night. Children outnumbered the adults, most under five. Shining faces with every skin color, eye shape, and hair type were running about having a jovial time. The ease of conversation with these children amazed me. Even the most reserved little ones ended up talking or giving big affirming smiles. One little girl approached stating, “I was adopted from Korea, where were you adopted from? My name is Margo, what is yours?” How old are you? I asked, she responded, “I was adopted at six months.” Clearly, she knew her reason for attending!

Dinner was potluck with foods representing the countries of adoption, making for a delicious and conversation filled meal. Nevertheless, cheetos, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate milk were hit items with the children. (Same items won at the last fun night!)

Ending the meal, Cyril Paul and two members of his group played their engaging music for us, even having us soar like birds. Adults went to the Library to hear Maxine Walton from the Children’s Home Society discuss the Ages and Stages of Understanding Adoption. If you are interested in these facts, go the Adoption Ministry link and check out “Features” to see a chart about this issue.

A children’s movie, crafts, toys and Steve Friedrichs entertained the age six and under, while Mark Quinn played games and held discussions with the seven and older. All children were happy and busy while the parents were listening to Maxine.

Meeting back together, a final prayer to our Heavenly Mother ended the evening.

A good time was had by all.
