Saturday, July 20, 2002: Pre-Ride Party

We've waited an additional two weeks this year to begin our ride to Chicago in support of the AIDS beneficiaries, causes, and people we ride for. Looking on the bright side, one could say riders had two extra weeks to train and prepare for the ride. Something many of us feared in starting later this year was the possibility that the weather might be hotter. Given the present weather forecast, it looks like we may have a cooler start to our ride than we experienced last year. That is wonderful news to both crew and riders.

Concordia University has been a busy hub! Today, last minute preparations are made for Day Zero and for the Heartland AIDS Ride Day One. Tomorrow, Day Zero, is the day when all loose ends are tied up with respect to medical information, funds collected for the cause, tent assignments, safety and crew training. One reporter for Team Oz took in the many activities underway there.
Team Oz encourages you to join us at the opening ceremonies at Concordia University at 6:30 am on Monday. You can also find a spot along the morning route to watch the riders leave. For locations, visit our Cheering Stations page.

Charlie Kapp and friend

Most of Team Oz enjoyed a party at the home of Paul Lipetzky and Charlie Kapp. The donation of time, heart and self of these two people is hard to overstate. Paul again donated much time planning many training rides for the bikers, and Charlie continued her never-ending campaign of love both in Africa and here at home. This past year, Charlie did it all! Anything from organizing fundraising to crewing to holding AIDS orphans in Africa.

Bridget Galeigh sewed bandanas for Team Oz riders, so that we might be readily recognizable to each other and others. She distributed them at the Send Off Party today allowing riders to pick from three different "Wizard of Oz" patterns. You will see us riding with pink, blue or multicolored bandanas tied to our bikes. Many, many thanks Bridget for your time, money and commitment to Team Oz.

It was quite humid today, so we may look a bit wilted. The mood today? Some expressed concern and apprehension if it was their first experience doing this long of a bike ride. Most of us were excited that after having had to wait so long, Monday, Day One was just around the corner.
