The 2002 Small Christian Community Picnic experienced a slight delay as wind and rain enveloped the Wabun Shelter area of Minnehaha Park at its scheduled time to begin; prompting some second-thoughts by those who had come some distance to be there. As the sun emerged from behind departing clouds and the wind subsided more persons drove into the park, and by the end of the evening some 70 persons were in attendance.

Organized as a get-together for members of all of the 50-plus different SCC groups by Tom Smith-Myott of St. Joan's staff, most of the work to pull it off was accomplished by a team of persons from one of the SCC’s, “The Travelers”. Vicki Nipper and Jim Miller were responsible for shopping for the food provided the attendees. Betty Resner and Evon Linneman were the chief cooks, overseeing the preparation of Brats, Hamburgers and Wieners. Karen Johnson was responsible for the signs helping persons through the otherwise unmarked maze leading to the Wabun Shelter area.

The individual dishes contributed by those of us attending provided a gourmet's delight in salads, vegetables and desserts. The food and drink available to us fully occupied two long tables under the shelter. However, the opportunities to meet and talk with others in the process was by far the highlight of the evening. I came across someone with whom I had worked many years prior...which was a delightful surprise for both of us.

Representatives from most of the ten or so groups attending were asked to report on their individual group's interests, activities, and major projects; the diversity of which was not only instructive but highly entertaining as we got to better understand what they REALLY did during some activities!

An interest in involving others in next year's picnic preparation and execution was expressed by the group who has done such for the past three years. Tom pointed out that it could even be spread between two or more groups in an attempt to spread the workload as well as to know better those in other communities. Communities which have such an interest can call or leave a message with Tom Smith-Myott at 612.823.8205; with a promise of the help

and advice from those who have shouldered the responsibility these past years. Looks like a great opportunity for a new “project” for an SCC or two!
