"2002 Family Camp"
The weather threatened but failed to spoil the SJA 2002 Family Camp at Camp Friendship in Annandale. Amid forecasts of the "first snowfall of the year" games went on, crafts were crafted, bonfires glowed, and 160 parishioners enjoyed another successful Family Camp. Many thanks to Kathy Itzin and her crew of parent volunteers for their efforts.

Campers gathered Friday evening to find their cabin assignments and greet their new bunkmates. Being "thrown together" in a cabin with 3-4 other families might sound scary, but this is just another way of building community at St. Joan of Arc. Friday evening's communing was hastened by the fact that their were only 2 cabins that brought a television set and the Twins were in the playoffs.

Saturday campers were treated to several programs featuring Native American culture, nature hikes, obstacles courses for teens, and creation of "peace flags" in the crafts building. Saturday evening brought the traditional Halloween-costumed dance and bonfire. This year, 2 karaoke machines were added and judging by their popularity this silly pastime may become a fixture at Family Camp.

Sunday featured the church service put on by the children with help from Karen Wendt and Rachel Kroog. The service centered on the camp theme of “Celebrating the Spirit of Peace.” Children acted and danced, representing various continents in the world all seeking the meaning of peace. Following the service, a parting brunch was held and campers said goodbye to old and new friends and returned home to rake leaves, do homework, clean the house, ...
