"A Very Special Gift"

Children's Christmas Program
Tuesday, December 10th, 2002

Imagine a birthday party for Jesus with nearly 100 singing, clapping and laughing children. St. Joan of Arc hosted such a celebration this past week with the 12th annual Children’s Christmas program, A Very Special Gift. Guided by the talents of Michael Hennessy, Rachel Kroog and Heidi Wennen, the children sang, rapped, and danced their way through a modern rendition of Jesus’ birth. The program highlighted not only the gifts the children would bring to Jesus on his birthday but also the special gifts each child brings to the St. Joan of Arc community.

The program began with a prelude featuring the many talents of St. Joan youth and preschool children along with their gift of enthusiasm. Holiday readings, violin and piano solos, and exuberant renditions of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” were just a few of the talents showcased. Laughter and mirth abounded as the preschool children delighted the crowd with their own kazoo rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.”

The fun and laughter continued as the elementary children kicked off the main program, A Very Special Gift, singing and jingling through “Jingle Bells.” A modern rap and a choreographed dance with ribbons were just a few of the elements the children performed for the crowd. The highlight came as each child shared what he or she would bring to Jesus’ birthday party.

And what were some of the gifts our children would bring Jesus? They included love and music; a violin performance; a gymnastics mat; peace; a handmade clay pot and mug; a handmade picture; a tree; a song; a big hug while telling him everything would be o.k.; a quilt so he would be warm; a camera so he could take pictures around the world; a math book; a chessboard with lessons; a thank-you card for making the world a better place; a pet so he would have something to adore; a Transformer; and a clock.

Jeanne Morales has been active at St. Joans for the past year. She loves working in her garden, attending the St. Joan of Arc Bible Study and sneaking off for camping trips when she has time.
The program concluded with the children leading the audience in “Silent Night” and “Happy Birthday Dear Jesus.” And of course, no party would be complete without delicious birthday cake---both chocolate and white. What a happy celebration indeed!
