Spring has sprung, honest! After what seemed to many to be the longest winter since Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote The Long Winter, we really had sunshine and clear blue skies on April 25th. Farmer Rick, Farmer Dan and about twenty or so others with strong backs gathered to start the first St. Joan's Flower and Vegetable Garden.
Farmer Rick was in charge, since it was his wheelbarrow.  Farmer Dan was in second in command, since he left his accordion at home. Adults and children of all ages were working hard.
A very wise man once said, "What one needs in gardening is a cast-iron back, with a hinge in it." (Charles Dudley Warner). Hearing someone ask when the massage therapist would arrive made me think of that quote. By the end of the dig, there was a lot of reaching and stretching.

How will the garden grow? The garden will be laid out in three sections, with paths between them to allow viewers to walk through it.

A few neighborhood kids dropped in, and seeing that they could dig in the dirt, and pull up grass, decided to join in. Farmer Rick would like to find a way that the kids in the St. Joan's neighborhood could be involved in the garden. Watching the kids work, it seems to be a good idea, so if anyone has any ideas how to reach out to the kids, be sure to contact Farmer Rick.

How do you tell a flower from a weed? If you water it and it dies, it is a flower. If you pull it out and it grows back? That's a weed (Gallagher).

A garden is a lot of work, but when you have a lot of people to help, it is also a lot of fun.

Last week's "Big Dig" was such a success that this Wednesday(5/2) at 6:30 pm, it's Manure Spreading('The Big Spread'??). Check the website or the Garden Hotline at 612.823.8205 ext. 5 for details.
