Gym Liturgies:
It is Earth Sunday and we celebrate our generous planet in a special “Cosmic Story” compiled by parishioners Dana White and Roger Dick and directed by Anna Vagle. Our liturgy of the word includes song, spoken word, poetry and images as well as congregation participation. Thank you readers, musicians, choir, saxophonist Rich Manik and visual artist Fred Vagle. “We are the earth become conscious!”
Family Mass:
We celebrate our earth today with a special “challenge” from the Environmental Justice Service Sunday group. Welcome all families to this child-centered liturgy.
A Prayer Service for the People of Tibet: Join us on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 pm in the church as we hold the people of Tibet in our hearts with prayer,
meditation and music shared by Carin Vagle. We pray especially for the safety of the community of monks who visited us recently at SJA – a recording of their chanting will be part of our service.
Volunteer Appreciation Party: All volunteers are invited to a staff hosted Casino Night, Friday, May 2, 6:30—10:30 pm in the SJA gym. Join us for drinks, food and entertainment. RSVP to the Parish Center.

Pastor's 2 Cents: Fr. Jim DeBruycker: Once again poor Thomas asks the dumb question. “Where are you going?” And once again, John does it on purpose so that those later followers of Thomas don’t misunderstand. “I am the way the truth and the life” is Jesus’ response. He does not mean, just act the way I do, believe I speak the truth and I will give you long life; but I am the source of all these things. I am one with God. I am the divine logos. The disciples do not get the message. “Show us the Father,” is their response. They do not understand yet that to see Jesus is to see the Father. To understand the Father is to understand Jesus. This reading is a great comfort at the time of death. The promise of a dwelling place in the next world is a great relief. I will be housed in the realm of God. The greater comfort is the response “I am the way the truth and the life,” because it says all of salvation has happened as a gift of the logos, the Christ of God. We are saved and inherit eternal life because of the action of Jesus in this world opening the next. The required response is relief and thanksgiving at the grace received, as well as the humility of the creation so loved by their God. This awe of God is the perfect response on this earth day. Can we look at creation and be in awe of this gift and see it as a shared gift, not just for us but whoever comes after? Humanity’s great curse is its need to or desire to be God and not godly. The trap of power ‘over’ always brings us down. The need to ‘control’ rather than ‘live with’ usually spells destruction. Even the early Church had infighting only months after Jesus’ death. The native Jews did not want to share goods or power with the Diaspora Jews. The Church found its first order in the Deacons, the diakonoia, the righteous ones, who were to guard and distribute the goods of the Church.
What if I told you that dwelling place, mansion or room described in scripture is as dependent on the care of its inhabitants for it as is our care for the earth. Got you worried now, don’t I.
