Gym Liturgies:

Joseph Bailey will speak on Fearproof Your Life at today’s gym liturgies. The Mental Illness Ministry will have resource tables in the courtyard after each liturgy.

We welcome one of SJA’s favorite song-writer, activist singers, Ann Reed to sing at our gym liturgies today. Welcome back always, Dan Chouinard!

Family Mass:

Don Dehn, father and parishioner will continue our celebration of the earth through pictures and a holy “Eco-lesson!” We welcome all families to this child-centered Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Registration for All Faith Formation Classes (preschool - high school) for the next school year will be held in Hospitality Hall after both masses today and next Sunday, May 4. Stop down and register! Registration deadline, June 15, 2008.

A Blessing of Expectant Families will help us celebrate our future arrivals here at St. Joan’s! If you are among those welcoming a new member into your family join us on Wednesday, May 7 at 7 pm for this beautiful spring ritual of new life!

Human Rights in Guatemala: Today at 12:30 in the Parish Center Upper Room, our Sister Parish committee hosts a presentation by two Minnesotans recently returned from Guatemala who will speak on human rights accompaniment and the need for this presence. A free will offering will be taken – refreshments will be served.

The Annual Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 8 pm in the gym. Join us for carnival games, face painting, a clown and entertainment. Bring yourself, your family and a salad or dessert to share. Burgers, brats and beverages will be provided. FFI or to volunteer please call Steve Friedrichs at the Parish Center.

The Bottom Line: Many of us enjoy cookies, juice and coffee after the Sunday masses. This has been a tradition at St. Joan’s for many years; it is a time to socialize and mix with parishioners. The cookies come from the Cookie Cart and provide jobs for teens in North Minneapolis, and the coffee is fair trade, peace coffee. FYI, just the cookies cost about $425 a week. On a good Sunday the free will offering brings in about $200.

Pastor's 2 Cents: Fr. Jim DeBruycker:

At the Finance Meeting we had the continuing discussion over giving. A number were celebrating the excellent contributions of Easter (thank you) which temporarily put us back in the black, while others were lamenting the need for vigilance and reminding people to maintain and increase their envelope giving as well as trying to get more people to use APP, the automated giving plan. This discussion will never end until the parousia, hopefully. It is important.

On my home front this past weekend we had an estate sale trying to get rid of the last of my parents’ possessions. It was amazing the people who came through the house. We had things priced to sell, and luckily they sold. Few things were priced over .50 and yet the take came to over $800, to be used for estate expenses. Of course, we took turns stepping behind the garage to shed a tear over some item sold which still had sentimental value.

The only thing that got me was my dad’s old plastic lawn chair. It had .50 marked on it and this rather rude man offered me a quarter. I told him to give me a break. I wasn’t about to come down .25!. He threw fifty cents at me and walked away. I told my father to break a chair leg when he sat on it. He will too! Do I have to confess that?

At some point in the day my sister came in after one of her sad spells and announced, “You know we are orphans.”- I wonder if Bill Gates wants to adopt me? I guess we are orphans, although I think of us more now as the generation next up to meet the grim reaper. Positive thinking is my forte.

What I was really thinking about through the Finance Committee Meeting and the sale was how I can hardly wait to start working on my house and yard, laying out some garden space around the house, painting and repairing windows and generally fixing things up. Its called Spring, or the period of divide, denial of all that’s bad in the world.

Jesus says to his disciples, I’m not going to leave you orphaned, I am going to send you the Spirit, the Advocate. This Spirit will give you the insight to see beyond despair, to hope, to find new beginnings and avenues to life and Spiritual understanding. We have to plow through a lot of the mundane, but luckily God gives us dreams to make it through. We’re not orphaned. Its just time for us to live with what our forbears left us, physical, practical and spiritual.
